The New Knowledge Management: Complexity, Learning and Sustainable Innovation by Mark McElroy. Butterworth Heinemann 2003 (248 pages)

Much existing literature on "first generation knowledge management has focused on supply-side sharing and integration of old knowledge that has already been created and exists in organizations. KM consultant Mark McElroy calls for a new "second generation" push towards including demand-side production of new knowledge for innovation management and organizational learning.

McElroy's book is divided into 11 chapters, many of which are reprints of his previously published papers (eg. in the Journal of Knowledge Management); thus some of the material in the book gets repetitive.

Based in Vermont, Mark McElroy is the president of the Knowledge Management Consortium International (www.kmci.org) and CEO of MacroInnovation Associates. The author cites influences by Daniel Quinn (author of "Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit"), James Lovelock (developer of Gaia theory), Donella Meadows (of the Sustainability Institute), Steven Cavaleri and Joseph Firestone.
